I’ve been getting a lot of messages lately from kids and parents who have read this post. The biggest points made are about being made fun of by other kids and parents considering cosmetic surgery for their child.
I’m sorry to any who have gotten made fun of for having bent pinkies. I never did. If it’s someone you consider a friend making fun of you, then tell them it bothers you. Anyone else? Just try to ignore them. Their issues are reflections of themselves and aren’t really about you. Easier said than done though, I know.
And oy! I say no to surgery! Having a bent finger isn’t going to hamper your (or your child’s) hands movement much if at all. My dad spent 3 decades as a musician and was never bothered by any finger movements he needed to do. Plus, surgery may actually cause more damage than was there before. And really, why subject someone to unnecessary surgery!?! (Oh and yes, of course, if it’s an extreme bend, talk to your doctor, etc, etc)
I actually like my silly bent fingers. I was very young when I first realized not everyone had bent pinkies. But I also knew that my dad had them too and I liked that because it somehow meant I was like my dad. As the years went on, I’ve learned about more and more people in my family who have them. There’s some sort of strange bond there. Hah.
I also have bent pinkies. They are very noticable but they give me character. Besides no one has ever made fun of me for them. And its great to crack jokes on people you just meet if they accidentally step on your fingers or something. Oddly enough I have done that many times. only down fall is i play the flute and since my hands are so tiny and my pinkies are bent its hard to reach some keys. oh well. i still like them anyway.
hi i’m tia i am 11 and i have bent pinkys to and your right it isnt the end of the world actally about 3 people in my family have bent pinkys and every one at school thinks my pinkys are cool beacuse i am the only one who has bent pinkys lol and i would NEVER think of get surgery to remove them beacause they are part of who i am
There’s nothing wrong with bent pinkies. Never trust a straight pinky person, they only want to take away your lovely banana pinkies that give you some individuality. Bent pinkies rock!
I passed them onto my daughter, only one of four to receive the awesome power of the bent pinky gene. She is proud of her fingers. Surgery? ridiculous!
Thank for sharing this experience! I found this article through googling information about piano and bent pinkies. My 5-year old daughter has them. We didn’t notice this trait until 10 days ago. She told me that her pinkies are different from her friends’. She also complained about the difficulty of playing G7 chord on piano. I therefore took her to see a doctor today and accepted that this is a hereditary trait. None of my husband or me get this though (I have my right pinky bent but that was from a fierce ball game when I was 10). We will look around our relatives though they all live in different continents. In any case, I am glad to know that people with bent pinkies can still be professional musicians.
