Happy New Year! Hope it’s a fantastic one! I don’t usually do resolutions but this year I thought I’d set a few goals:

Write! I have been suffering with bouts of writers block off and on for the past 3 years. This year I will be trying new techniques to break it and return to a regular writing schedule.

25 New Recipes. Ever since I had to go gluten-free I’ve had to learn whole new ways to eat. I’ve also been on a everything must be healthy kick. Last year I made 22 new recipes (If I counted right) and a bunch of them have become part of my regular cooking routine now. This year I plan to learn 25 new recipes.

Continue the diet. This past Fall I dropped 3 pant sizes. I still have a ways to go and I plan on hitting my goal weight this year.

More yoga. I started taking a yoga class on Saturdays. My goal this year is to do yoga at least twice during the week at home too. And thanks to Christmas, I now have all the yoga supplies I could ever need. :)

Work on Reiki & Cat ‘N Owl. In September I walked away from moderating my Reiki Facebook page, doing Reiki itself, tarot, and everything Cat ‘N Owl related. I needed the break. And the online community was getting under my skin. Oy! This year will be about reacquainting myself with what I love but without the old frustrations.

My own designs. I have been working on learning scherenschnitte and metal work but I use other people’s templates. This year I’d like to work on coming up with some of my own designs.

Leave work at work. I have a bad habit of bringing work home with me. If I want to have time to do any of these goals, the day job needs to stay at the day job.

That’s that. Here’s to 2011! May it be filled with awesomeness! :)

Today’s the last day of my mini vacation. Boo! It’s been relaxing. I meant for the weekend to be a writing fest, but I ended up sleeping a lot instead. By sleep, I mean hibernation style sleep. I’d be in the middle of doing something, like writing, and then I’d blink and be asleep. It was unreal. I did write some though, just not as much as I had been planning. Guess I really needed the sleep. Hah.

I also caught up on season 2 of True Blood, which was fun. It’s so bizarre seeing the differences from the books. The show is much better since the books are pretty flimsy.  However, I didn’t like the maenad story in the book, I certainly didn’t care for the amped up version with the entire town involved. Man, that story dragged. And Eric wasn’t even in it. Why bother? :P

Ruki of course assisted me with all the sleep and vegging. I thought it was odd that she kept sitting half on the floor/half on the carpet but I guess she was comfortable:

And well, that’s that. I guess it’s time to get to more writing. I hope I’m all caught up on sleep now! :P

Have a happy day all!

I got a bread machine for Christmas. Woot! I asked for it because store bought gluten-free bread is not only expensive, it’s pretty gross tasting (at least by what I’ve tried so far). The consistency is cardboard.  I picked out the Breadman because it has a gluten-free setting. I also like that it has a little bit of a space pod feel to it. :P

What I’ve discovered though is that making bread is more like an alchemist project than cooking. And with gluten-free bread, it’s even more complex! My first two loaves came out complete fiascos. But the third, well that’s what you see here:

I probably should’ve wiped the extra flour off before I photographed it, eh? :P Anyway, It’s a cinnamon raisin bread made from bean flours and no yeast. I got the recipe from The Gluten-Free Gourmet Bakes Bread.  I used the dark setting when cooking which is why you see some darker coloring spots. They look darker in the photographs than in person too.

Still, I may try medium next time and see how it goes. I went with dark this time because the loaves cooked so unevenly and left raw spots. Ick. This time though, it was cooked well all the way through. And man oh my, it tastes wonderful. I really thought I’d never get to have anything that tasted even close to real bread again. Guess I was wrong. :D

I’m SO gonna have to try to make pizza dough soon!!!

I forgot that when I took pics of the throne, I’d also taken a few quick shots of the office itself. So, here’s what my office looks like:

My Office

Yep, piles of paper, stacks of books, plus I stick a lot of things to the walls. Funny that I didn’t think to capture the windows. It’s the Flatiron so the unseen wall is basically wall o’ glass. I’ll have to take more pics.

Here’s the other side of my office. It’s my extra desk. The stuff piled on it = remnants of editorial interns past. Note the taped arm on the chair…classy, eh? :P

My last post on here was in September. And then…wow…things got a wee bit busy you could say. I moved. Woo-hoo! I still haven’t finished unpacking and have no idea when I’ll get to that. I’ll share some pics when I’m more settled. But here is Ruki, enjoying the new windows. They have a wider sill so she can really spread out.

Ruki in the window

And here she is with her head in the window. And yes, there is a screen there. She’s not about to jump out or go anywhere.

Ruki in the window

Moving all happened in the middle of a wee little book release ;), which happily unseated Dan Brown for the #1 spot on the NYT list last week. Woo-hoo! If you follow Tor’s Twitter, you’ve probably seen me posting lots about it. Things like how we made a throne out of the boxes stored in my office:

TGS Throne

I mean really, what else do you do with boxes? If I had more it would have been a fort. :P Oh, my owl took his turn in the throne too.

I’ve also been working on tons of stuff that none of you (unless you work with me) will see until next year. I have plans. Ideas. Yep.

Hmm. What else. That’s pretty much absorbed my life as of late. I’ve watched (listened to) a lot of TV while I’ve been packing and unpacking though. On demand is so the way to go. Venture Brothers is back and kicking ass. Fringe happily fills that missing X-Files void for me. NCIS rocks, while I gave up on NCIS LA which was painful to watch. No idea what happened after that awesome cross-over. Maybe it was losing the leader. Callen is no leader. Stargate SGU and Sanctuary rock too. I’m surprised by how much I’m digging White Collar and The Good Wife. Doesn’t hurt White Collar that it has Jonesy in it! :) And ABC and Fox really need to become available on demand like the other channels are so I can watch shows like FlashForward. I’m no fan of watching TV on my computer after working on it all day.

For books though, I’ve really only had a chance to read on the commute. I read a bunch of Kitty Norville books and am on book 6. I like werewolf types. I’m also reading Outlander. I love the setting and side characters. However, the lead has the emotional range of a rock.

And that’s that. I’m still getting caught up on most things right now so I’m not sure yet how much I’ll be posting until things settle down. So for now, I’ll just leave you with this, the new Clash of the Titans trailer:

And this awesome Fringe preview with NIN’s “Zero Sum” that makes me super happy to rewatch. :)

Have an awesome day all!

I just picked up the keys for my new place. No pics yet. No idea where the camera is. :/ Now that I have the place to myself and don’t have the super and her husband in there with me, I can look around more easily. It’s bigger than I remember which is awesome, of course. The bedroom is a little smaller than the one I have now, but the living room and full-sized kitchen more than make up for that. I actually have a grown up sized stove that’s brand new! Yay!

Moving day is Oct 7. I can’t wait!

Even though I am behind with packing, I planned on taking tonight off. Joints are a’ aching. I figured I’d do laundry and grocery shopping. I tried to go to the market but was denied. All my routes there were blocked. Accident? No idea. So I came home and packed up my laundry only to discover someone else using the washers. Typical, eh?

I think all signs are pointing to having some fries, a cup of yogurt, and a pudding cup (I have nothing else.) for dinner and watching NCIS. Maybe I can do some light packing as I veg…or you know…maybe not too. Tired over here. :P

But man oh my, I can’t wait to move! Gone will be seeing Crazy Pete ass up in the dumpster foraging for treasure (and scouring for recyclables—whoa be the person who misses one in their trash—I’m told it gets ugly). Gone will be the drug dealer/abuser neighbors and their raging fights, the cops breaking down their door at o’ dark thirty in the morning, and the husband (I believe) stealing my mail order prescriptions. Gone will be the doll-sized fridge that makes such loud alien noises, even Ruki is frightened.

I can go on and on. But I think my fries are done and you know, priorities and all. :P

That’s that for this ramble.

Have a great night!

I work on web for a living, am a writer, and I always have a lot to say. Actually, I’m a rambler. Big time. Yet, when it comes to posting over here, I’m usually at a loss—or lazy. That comes into play too.

Will I try to become a better blogger?
Probably not.

Will I ditch the site?
Probably not.

I’m too much the web addict to do that. Plus, I like tweaking things over here and moving things around, even if I don’t post at all.

What’s the point of this ridiculous post?
No freaking idea. I was just looking at making some changes on the site and noticed I hadn’t posted since July.

:/

Yes, I added a new category called Daily Life. No worries. I won’t yammer on about personal stuff. I plan on keeping it to keeping it to things like current reading, writing, and web projects, plus just general amusements here and there.

I think it will help swing this blog on over to a more casual tone, in effect making it easier for me to keep up with. If I wait until I finish reading a book to talk about it, I’ll rarely get back to posting about it—especially if I’ve already slipped into reading the next in a series. As is, I already have a habit of starting too many books at the same time. (See my current reading list in the sidebar and you’ll understand what I’m talking about.)

Plus, there are manuscripts to read too. I can’t help it. I try to not take on too many of those to read, especially since I read slowly. Much too slowly. But as it is, we are currently in the process of starting a new season of books. The way it works for us on the marketing side of things is that we start by having the editors present their titles for that season to us. And wouldn’t you know it? I already jotted down two manuscripts I wanted to see. Steampunk. It couldn’t be helped, you see?

As to my current reading list, I just started reading The Somnambulist. I’m about 50 pages into it and am already enjoying it a lot. :) There are some rather quirky characters that have already endeared themselves to me. I’ve had that Dresden book on my currently reading list for a while and really, I should have finished it by now. But here’s the thing, it’s got horror film characters in it. I love horror, but it feels like I should be reading it in the Fall. Or at least if it’s a little cooler out. So, although I’m a chunk of the way into it, and loving the story so far, I think I would enjoy it more if I read it with the right setting.

And since this ramble is already long, I’ll just head right into Hoody-Hoo!  I’ve been reading a lot of Knights of the Dinner Table lately. I’ve plowed through Bundles of Trouble volumes 1-21 and am currently reading volume 22. They only have 23 volumes out at the moment, which means I just may have a meltdown after I read that one. I don’t read the monthly magazine since, to put it bluntly, it sucks. I have no interest in the peripheral mumbo jumbo. I just want to read the comics!

All right, all right. Guess I’ll stop there.

Later! :)

Owl Trinket BoxI’ve created a Flickr album to share some of my owl collection. The one you see here is of an owl trinket box. Yay for owls!

See the collection here.

Part of my “What it’s like to…” series.

It’s been a while since I wrote something for this series and having just spent the past three days serving jury duty, I figured why not? This is a lengthy one, but I wanted to document how it worked. So here we go….

I’ll admit it, I got that slip of paper in the mail announcing my juror summons and I groaned. Instantly my head rattled with ideas of how I could possibly get out of this, or at least reschedule it. I tried to reschedule it, but my request was denied. Bleh. So, off to court I went.

There I followed the sheep herd as we went through metal detectors and passed our bags through the obligatory X-ray machine thingy. Many people groaned about how we must all be the people who couldn’t come up with better excuses for getting off. Others related the process to being worse than getting a root canal done. Oh yeah, feel the love and excitement going around this group.

We sat in a big room full of seats and hoped our names wouldn’t get called. Many of us tried to read or just talk, but that was hard over the booming previously taped Entertainment Tonight show they were playing on the wall sized TV. The show was reporting more nonsense about celebrity lives, but then a clip came on about a brawl that happened in a court room. We all laughed. I don’t believe the courts meant to play a show that had that on it. Hah!

Then names started to be called. Mine was one of them. I shuffled along with my new sheep herd and moseyed into a court room. There we found the judge, a court aide, the plaintiff and his attorney, plus the defendant’s attorney. I noted that the walls were wood paneling, with the wood being the same color as the judge’s desk and the tables where council sat. Very monochromatic.

We were told that it was a civil case involving a slip and fall accident and that it was estimated to take 3 1/2 days. The jury would consist of eight people since it was a civil case. Names were randomly called for people to move into the jury box for questioning by the judge. As people were excused from the case, others were selected to take their place. I had no idea selecting a jury could be so tedious and time consuming. The judge reads off question after question for each and every person. He started to sound like that clichéd broken record player.

My turn came and I answered where I live, what I do, whether or not I’m married and have kids, etc. etc. I had to conference up at the judge’s desk with council because I said that I had been in an accident with injury. That was nerve-wracking. Standing in between council in front of a judge is a bit daunting, what can I say? I stammered a bit as I explained my dog bite incident, then was accepted as juror #7. I took a seat.

Watching who was getting excused by the judge or council I can guess that I was picked because I am female, white, employed, don’t work in the legal or medical field, nor am I married to someone who does. Plus, I don’t have kids that work in either field either. We did end up with one man on the jury, but he was the last chosen and I believe because of those left, few fit the mold I’ve described anyway.

The judge went over our responsibilities and introduced us to the jury room, then we were dismissed for the day. At this point I was still shaking my head in wonder and shock that I was sitting on a jury—and that’d I’d have to call in to work too.

The next day the jurors filtered into the jury room. We found out that some of us were excited to be there, although others were less than pleased. However, we’d all resided ourselves to make the best of it. What else can you do, eh?

This room, too, was wood paneling. It was small. No windows. There was a bathroom and a microwave and a big table with chairs. We spent a lot, and I do mean a lot, of time in this room. What you never see on TV is all the waiting around that goes on in court. The judge has other things going on so there are times when we’d sit in that room for an hour or more just chatting and basically hanging out. The judge was very nice and respectful of our time though, so he did his best to tell us how long we’d have in between in case we wanted to go make phone calls or get coffee or something.

We saw three witnesses that first day. The plaintiff, the defendant, plus one doctor. The next day we saw another doctor. I found the questioning to be tedious and dull, yet intriguing at the same time. It actually became like a puzzle for me, fitting all the pieces of information together to see what the picture really is. After the last witness, we experienced the most painful part of the trail…the explanation of the law. The judge goes over all the points of the law that pertain to the case, as well as the definitions for all the legalese. I tried very hard to pay attention here. My head hurt and eventually it sounded like how the adults speak in Charlie Brown cartoons. Talk about being overwhelmed….

Next began the jury deliberation.

The gist of the case is this: Around 5-5:30 one night a man was walking. It was snowy and the plows had pushed show over the grass so he went around. He stepped out of the street and onto the dirt and fell. There was ice under the snow. He fractured his wrist and tore cartilage, the latter created permanent damage which means he will always have pain (according to his doctor).

The question came into play, was the owner of the property (the company) negligent for not having cleared the snow? If so, was the negligence probable cause for the accident? The alternate question would be whether the plaintiff was negligent for having stepped there instead of going around. If yes, then we’d have to set of percentages of fault.
When we sat down to deliberate, many of us were siding with the defendant. We were thinking that the area is not a sidewalk, so the owner isn’t responsible for shoveling there.
Then someone noticed the bus stop sign.

We were given pictures of the scene as evidence and finally were able to see them up close to examine them. Turns out the area where the man fell is a bus stop. Even though it’s dirt around the bus stop, NJ law dictates that land that is designated as pedestrian area is consider a “sidewalk,” i.e. since it is a bus stop and labeled as such, it is an area designated for foot traffic. NJ law also dictates that commercial property owners are responsible for keeping “sidewalks” clear on their property, which in this case includes the land with the bus stop on it.

And yes, it sucks for the commercial property owner. I know this. They’ve been in that spot for nine years and never knew they had to shovel the bus stop. I don’t necessarily agree with that, but the law is pretty straight forward here, even if I’ve glossed over what it is a bit. Although I will point out that mention of the bus stop never did get brought up in trial. We asked about the law pertaining to it being a bus stop and the judge told us he couldn’t tell us that. I’m not sure why it wasn’t included in the case since we aren’t privy to how what evidence got there. So we had to rely on what information was given to us and take it from there.

The deliberation process was interesting. We had many questions, where the foreman had to write them down on a notepad, then ring the buzzer twice for the court aide to come. With each question, we’d get shuffled back into the courtroom for the judge to answer the question (or in most cases tell us he couldn’t answer it.) That was tough. We aren’t allowed to take notes and can only rely on our collective memory, so even if something is noted in the court records, we are not privy to that.

Surprising to me, we also had to come up with a the payout figures to the plaintiff on our own as well. Luckily we had someone with some swift thinking for number crunching so we came to a logical conclusion for that, at least to us. Then the foreman clicked the buzzer once, which meant we were ready with the verdict. We were called into court to announce it and the plaintiff thanked us on the way out. Tada. Jury duty was over.

All in all it was interesting and I learned a lot, but I am glad I didn’t get called for a criminal case since those can take a long, long time. I also go some inspiration for writing out of it which I hope to put to good use as soon as I can.
